Ruth Roman is the youngest child born to Lithuanian and Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) & Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. Her father's death as a Carnival barker at the age of a young girl and she was forced to provide for the family by working as a cleaner and a server. Ruth was raised in the poor Boston tenement neighborhood, Massachusetts. She was a student there. But she only stayed in the school for two years, before taking a break to pursue her acting career. Her path was not without obstacles. While in New York, her first task was to pose stills for crime magazines. the theatre work that she longed for was not available. As a hat check girl at a nightclub she quit and returned to Boston. In Boston, she earned a living as an usherette by during the day and then at night performed with the New England Repertory Company. This was her very first role as an actor. She took classes in drama at The Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
